REEL TIPS
How to Prepare for a Cinematic Actor Showreel
Booking a cinematic actor showreel shoot can feel daunting—especially if it’s your first time on camera or your first update in years. At Snowreels, we’re here to make the process supportive, collaborative, and low-stress. Here are some practical tips to help you feel confident and get the most out of your shoot.

CHOOSING YOUR SCENES
When it comes to building actor showreels, simplicity wins. Two people. One scene. A clear moment of intention.
Anna is happy to help you work through your casting range and goals. Whether you come with strong ideas or none at all, we’ll collaborate to create scenes that feel true to you. Not sure where to start? Ask for our writing questionnaire—or check out how our process works.
OUTFITS & COSTUMING
A key part of creating cinematic showreels for actors is choosing outfits that help each scene stand out—visually and tonally.
You’ll need three different looks (one per scene). Aim for:
-
Colours that pop against neutral walls
-
Something you feel comfortable and authentic in
-
Avoiding tight patterns or fine stripes
If you're doing a period piece or specific genre (e.g. crime, legal), let us know—we’ll work together on finding something that fits.

HAIR, & MAKE UP
For most showreels, we recommend a “less is more” approach.
Light makeup works best on camera, and the director on the day will always have de-shining tools or powder ready. For facial hair, plan your look ahead of time and schedule accordingly—scenes that need a fuller beard or stubble should be filmed earlier in the day.

LINE LEARNING
Our showreel is not a memory test.
We know lines can go out the window on the day—and that’s okay. The best thing you can do is pause, breathe, and start again from the last clean line. That makes it easy for us to cut around and preserve any golden takes. All of our reels are a mix of actors best takes on the day.
